LOSS OF PROPERTY - GAIN A FREEDOM FOR INDIA

Mrs.G.Jayalakshmi & Sri.S.Gopalakrishnan

Sri Gopalakrishnan was born in Kumbakkonam as the eldest son of Mr.Subramania Iyer & Mrs.Lalithambal who were hailing from an affluent family . Mr.Subramnia Iyer was a patriot , a Gandhian and a freedom fighter too. Like his father Sri.Gopalakrishnan too showed interest in Congress party and Gandhian principles .

After his father's demise , he was under the control of his maternal uncles. He also felt that his family properties were lavishly spent for unnecessary purposes by his uncles. This made him to feel that the money may be spent for nation's freedom activities. He made contacts with Sri.Sathyamoorthy and Sri.Kamaraj and whenever they come to Kumbakkonam , they used to stay in Gopalakrishnan's house. He developed extraordinary faith in Sri.Kamaraj and whatever Kamaraj instructed he followed. He was also close to Mr.Varadhan , Mr.Narayanasamy and Mr.T.N.Ramachandran . When Kamaraj and Mr.Varadhan of Kumbakkonam were arrested by Britishers and sent to Alipore Jail , Gopalakrishnan visited them daily and offered them their requirements through illegal means. When the jail authorities come to know these , he was searched to be arrested. He was not to be seen in Kumbakkonam for sometime and later arrested and put in jail. After his release he organized a big Congress exhibition in the Kumbakkonam Town High School ground. He  also attended All India Congress meeting at Bombay in 1942 along with Kamaraj . The theme of the meeting was " Do or Die " . Along with Mr.Narayanasamy he distributed the copies of the proposal made at the Congress meetings in and around Kumbakkonam.

By serving the poor and serving the country , Gopalakrishnan lost his major property and became a middle class man. Leaders like Thangavel Nadar were made by Gopalakrishnan by his conduct and hardwork. Later Gopalakrishnan was made , the Secretary of the Kumbakkonam Town Congress Committee. After the country's independence he wanted to quit politics as per Gandhiji's advice. But when his close friend Mr.Varadhan was competing for M.L.A.'s post , Gopalakrishnan was forced to help in getting him elected. He took the major responsibilities and paved the way for Mr.Varadhan's success.

At the time of election ( 1952 ) One Mr.A. Narayanasamy  Udaiyar  ( a close friend of  Mr.G.K.Moopanar ) and Gopalakrishnan were responsible for making Mr. G.K.Moopanar as member of Congress Party.   Gopalakrishnan (Secretary of Kumbakkonam Town Congress Committee ) get the signature of  Mr.G.K.Moopanar in the membership book .

He did not stop with this. When Mr.C.R.Pattabiraman stood for M.P. post in Kumbakkonam , Gopalakrishnan worked for his success too.

As Chief Minister when Kamaraj visited Kumbakkonam , he distributed 5 Acres of land and copper shield for the freedom fighters. Mr.Gopalakrishnan did not receive all these, but wanted to be a close associate of Kamaraj and lead a Gandhian life till his last days. That showed his humility . There were many poor people who received help form Gopalakrishnan. Mentioning the names of those who sought his help will demean his humbleness .

It is interesting to note that Kamaraj came to know Kudanthai Ramakrishnan as Mr.Gopalakrishnan's son at the marriage hall only. But Kudanthai Ramakrishnan starting from his early days was member of Congress , and ardent disciple of Kamaraj. He was also working for the improvement of Congress party along with Mr.Nedumaran.

Gopalakrishnan & Kudanthai Ramakrishnan paid homage to Kamaraj after his demise at Madras.
